Hello fine folks of Devils Lake. My name is Matt Nielsen and I am the new sports writer/general reporter at the Devils Lake Journal.
I am going to let you know a little bit about me since I am new in town. I am 23 years old and recently graduated from St. Cloud State University with a print journalism major along with an English minor. I am originally from Stewartville, Minn. which is a small town about eight miles south of Rochester. The only famous person to ever come out of Stewartville was Richard Warren Sears, who founded Sears, Roebuck and Company. That will be the one fun fact I will provide you about my hometown.
I ended up playing football at Rochester Community and Technical College for one year before transferring to St. Cloud State. I enjoyed my time playing football, but made the decision to transfer because I wanted a real college experience. I was the first person to graduate college in my family which is one of the proudest moments of my life.
I had the best four years of my life while attending SCSU and wouldn't trade it for anything. I am a huge fan of the Cleveland Browns. I try to make it to at least one of their games a year. My goal is to attend a game at every NFL stadium before I die. I have been to four stadiums thus far so I still have a little ways to go. I am also a huge Michigan Wolverines fan. My mother is from Michigan and she got me hooked on the Maize and Blue at a young age. Other than those two teams I am a huge fan of the Minnesota Wild, Twins, and Timberwolves. I love to travel and have been lucky to visit numerous places throughout the country that I never would have dreamed of five years ago.
My mother has had a big influence on me throughout my life and is one of the main reasons that I love sports as much as I do. We have been to numerous sporting events throughout the country together and most of our vacations are usually planned around sporting events. One of the most memorable sporting events I have ever been to was when the Twins defeated Detroit in game 163 during the 2009 season. I have never heard a stadium so loud in my life.
Sticking with baseball, my oldest sister Brooke lives in Dallas, TX and is an avid Texas Rangers fan. We try to make it to a Rangers/Twins game at least once a year together. I am glad she lives in Texas because it means I will always have a great place to get away no matter what time of year. My youngest sister, Tessa, is moving to Texas in August which is exciting. I have a good relationship with both of my sisters and it is always fun when the three of us get together because it doesn't happen often anymore.
Page 2 of 2 - I am also a big music junkie and try to attend concerts whenever I get the chance. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone in Devils Lake and I am excited to be the "sports guy." My goal is to give the community the best local sports coverage possible.
