Two weeks ago today they discovered the first Sullys Hill bison calf of 2013.
A bus of 44 5th graders was just arriving at Sullys Hill so they stopped the bus and turned them down the road to the prairie dog town to see the new calf. They asked if they could name him. Within minutes they all agreed to name him (or her?) Silas. Later they looked up the meaning of the name Silas and it means "of the forest." How fitting for a bison calf at Sullys Hill.
The road to the Sullys Hill overlook is open and will remain so as conditions allow. If the bison and elk are not at the feeding grounds they might be seen high on the hill tops as this is where the snow has melted and new blades of grass are growing.
A pileated woodpecker was seen and heard in a tree adjacent to the visitor center last week, as well.
