Before her sentencing for tax evasion, Lauryn Hill has reportedly paid her overdue taxes, Fox News reports.
Hill was due in court Monday for sentencing after pleading guilty to not paying taxes on $1.8 million in earnings between 2005 and 2007. As of two weeks ago, the singer had only paid $50,000 of $968,000 that she owed in back taxes ($554,000 owed for federal taxes alone), causing the judge to delay her sentencing until Monday.
To help her pay off her debt, Hill's attorney, Nathan Hochman, recently said that the former Fugees singer had signed a $1 million record contract with Sony and will take out a $650,000 loan. Earlier Monday, an e-mail from her attorney stated that Hill has now paid more than $970,000. Hill previously said that she didn't file her tax returns from 2005 to 2007 to protect her family from threats she was receiving at the time. She pleaded guilty last June and currently faces the maximum of one year for each count of tax evasion, but her attorney is hoping for probation.
