Mrs. Teresa Desai was named DLPS Teacher of the Year for 2014.
Desai earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Sociology from Dakota State University in Madison, S.D., in 1992. She began teaching at Sweetwater Elementary School in January 2003 as a Title I Reading Teacher and has continued in that position for the past 11 years.
Desai is first and foremost a dedicated and effective teacher. She is warm, caring, kind and has a sense of humor. She believes all students can learn. Desai does extra things for students such as providing rides home or to special events. Desai has earned a high level of respect from her colleagues not only at Sweetwater but across the entire Devils Lake Public School District. She stresses parent involvement in her teaching philosophy and makes many connections with parents. Desai continues to grow professionally and participates in various committees, professional development opportunities and teaches in the After-School Program. She is also very active in our community and in her church. Desai truly cares about students, staff and families. She was chosen as the North Dakota Title I Teacher of the Year this fall.
She is married to Pastor Jamie Desai and they have three sons: Max, Sam and Nik.
With the selection as Teacher of the Year for the DLPS district, Mrs. Desai is eligible for consideration for the 2014 North Dakota Teacher of the Year award which will be selected in August 2013 by a state selection committee which will meet in Bismarck.
The Devils Lake Public School Teacher of the Year Program is sponsored by Ramsey National Bank and Trust Company, the Devils Lake High School Student Council and the Devils Lake Public School District. For her selection as Teacher of the Year Ramsey National Bank and Trust awarded Mrs. Desai a $1,000 stipend to be used for enrollment and participation in a professional workshop or convention.
