  • North Dakota’s First Lady Betsy Dalrymple will promote the importance of summer reading, serving as a Reading Ambassador for the 2013 Scholastic Summer Challenge.
As part of First Lady Dalrymple’s involvement, Scholastic will donate 500 books to all second- through fifth-grade students at Riverside Elementary in Bismarck, Four Winds Community School in Fort Totten, Minnewaukan Public School in Minnewaukan, and Oberon Elementary in Oberon. The books will serve as take-home reading materials over summer vacation.
The Scholastic Summer Challenge is a four-month, global literacy campaign encouraging kids to read four or more books this summer to combat the “summer slide,” or the learning loss that occurs from simply being out of school. The Scholastic Summer Challenge unites students and schools as they participate in Read for the World Record, an attempt to set a world record for summer reading. Students will log their minutes spent reading at scholastic.com/summer, with results published in the 2014 edition of Scholastic Book of World Records.
The First Lady will be at Four Winds Community School on Friday at 10 a.m. and Oberon Elementary at 1:15 p.m. also on Friday, May 3.
