  • Devils Lake’s Keaton Thompson will get a chance to fulfill his dream of competing for a gold medal. The 18-year-old standout was selected to the U.S. men’s National 18-Under hockey team and will join the team as it competes in the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Under-18 Championship in Sochi, Russia.
The tournament is scheduled to run from April 18 through April 28.
Thompson, one of 23 players named to the U.S. roster, is the son of Devils Lake’s Todd Thompson, and the grandson of Allan Thompson, also of Devils Lake.
In Sochi, the U.S. Under-18 squad will try and continue its dominance on the ice. The U.S. squad has won each of the last five gold medals in the event, including last year in a tournament held in the Czech Republic.
The U.S. squad will be a bit younger than in previous years. The American squad will be led into the Sochi games by three returning veterans, forwards J.T. Compher and Anthony Louis, and defensemen Will Butcher.
Thompson is one of seven defensemen listed on the U.S. roster. In addition to Butcher and Thompson, the American roster will also sport defensemen  Gage Ausmus (East Grand Forks, Minn.), Connor Clifton (Matawan, N.J.), Clint Lewis (Burnsville, Minn.), Steven Santini (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Tommy Vannelli (Minnetonka, Minn.).
Compher and Louis are among the group of 13 forwards, which also includes Evan Allen (Sterling Heights, Mich.), Dawson Cook (Cadillac, Mich.), Jack Eichel (North Chelmsford, Mass.), Shane Eiserman (West Newbury, Mass.), Hudson Fasching (Burnsville, Minn.), John Hayden (Greenwich, Conn.), Tyler Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.), Kevin Labanc (Staten Island, N.Y.), Sean Malone (West Seneca, N.Y.), Michael McCarron (Macomb, Mich.) and Tyler Motte (St. Clair, Mich.).
Thatcher Demko (San Diego, Calif.), Hunter Miska (North Branch, Minn.) and Blake Weyrick (Ojai, Calif.) will be serving as the U.S. goalies.
Prior to tipping off play in the Sochi tournament, the Americans will be allowed to play one pre-tournament game against Canada on April 14.
The team will open the tournament on April against Russia at the Bolshoy Ice Dome.
The U.S. enters the tournament having captured a record nine consecutive medals, including back-to-back gold medals in 2005-06, four straight gold medals from 2009-12, two silver medals (2004, 2007) and one bronze medal (2008).
The U.S. is in Group A with the Czech Republic, Finland, Latvia and Russia. Group B consists of Canada, Germany, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland ...
