The weather outside may be still be a bit frightful, but the Devils Lake High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams had plenty to smile about last weekend.

The weather outside may be still be a bit frightful, but the Devils Lake High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams had plenty to smile about last weekend. The 2013 high school track and field season was off and running … literally.

The Devils Lake boys and girls both turned in solid outings at the Eastern Dakota Conference Indoor Championships on Friday at the Bison Sports Arena on the campus of North Dakota State University. Both teams had several athletes place despite taking small squads.

The DLHS boys finished ninth in the 10-team meet with 4.2 points. The Lady Firebirds placed 10th with five.

The Firebirds turned more than a few heads with a solid effort in the grueling 4x800-meter relay race. Devils Lake’s foursome of Chase Johnson, J.J. Duty, Sean Olson and Perry Mudgett legged out a time of 11 minutes, 16.66 seconds and finished eighth overall.

The DLHS quartet tallied one of the Firebirds’ 4.2 points with the effort.
Bradley Davidson also starred for the Firebirds. He finished seventh overall in the boys’ 200-meter dash with a mark of 24.54 seconds.
Devils Lake also garnered a solid effort in the 400-meter dash. The Firebirds had three runners finish in the top 33 in the event, including Johnson who sprinted to a 15th place finish with a time of 57.78.

Olson was 16th at 58.07, while Blair Roemmich was 33rd at 61.84.
Roemmich also claimed 15th in the triple jump competition. His best mark in the event was 34 feet, 7 ½ inches.

Wyatt Jetty also did well, taking 12th in the boys’ 3,200-meter run.
Like their male counterparts, the Lady Firebirds’ 4x800-meter relay team did well at the EDC Indoor meet. The foursome of Christa Lynse, MacKenzie Hartl, Jenna Asmunstad and Randi Widmer finished sixth in the race with a time of 11 minutes and 46 seconds.

Lynse also starred for the DLHS girls in the 800-meter run. She placed seventh in the overall standings in the event with a time of 2:35.53. Teammates Alexandra Paladino and Aasmunstad finished 21st and 30th, respectively.

Rayeisha King and Widmer proved themselves among the top athletes in the EDC with solid efforts in the 3,200-meter run and triple jump competitions. King finished 15th overall in the 2-mile race with a time of 15 :28.37, while Widmer was 18th in the triple jump with a leap of 28-feet, 3 ¾ inches.
Katie Brandt, Amber Gathman and Mallory Vose each turned in impressive efforts in the girls’ shot put competition. A junior, Brandt was 11th overall with a throw of 28-8. Gathman, a freshman, was 20th overall at 26-10, while Vose was 23rd at 24-9.
Vose is a junior at DLHS.
Chelsea Anderson and freshman Veronica Alexander finished 31st and 34th, respectively, in the long jump standings.
