  • Edna Lorraine (Perhus) Hovern, 87, of Lester Prairie, Minn., passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at her home in Lester Prairie, Minn. Funeral services celebrating her life were held Saturday, April 6 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, with interment at church cemetery.
    Edna Lorraine (Perhus) Hovern was born on April 9, 1925, in Cass County, N.D. She was the daughter of Albert and Dorothy (Hermundstad) Perhus. Edna was baptized as an infant on May 10, 1925, by Pastor M. Endresen, and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth on June 25, 1939, by Pastor C. Sandager both at Norman Lutheran Church in Kindred, N.D. She received her education in Kindred, and was a graduate of the Kindred High School Class of 1943. Edna furthered her education by attending Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, for 3½ years. She received a teaching degree in 1947.
    On June 19, 1948, Edna was united in marriage to Alton “Al” Hovern by Pastor Turms at Norman Lutheran Church in Kindred. She met Al in Eyota, Minn. Edna and Al made their home in Eyota and Upsala, Minnesota, until 1952, when they moved to Lester Prairie. God blessed their marriage with one son, Dean. They shared and enjoyed over 22 years of marriage, until Al passed away on December 19, 1970.
    In addition to being a loving wife, mother and homemaker, Edna taught English and was the librarian at Watertown High School in Watertown, Minn. Edna was a faithful member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie where she sang in the choir.
    Edna was full of life. Her passions included bridge, Alton’s art work and the neighbor’s children. Edna treasured the time she spent with her friends and family, especially her granddaughter, Missy.
    Edna is survived by her son, Dean Hovern and his lady, Julie Yantes of Devils Lake, N.D.; granddaughter, Melissa “Missy” Jason and her husband, Scott, of Henderson, Nev; daughter-in-law, Shirley Ripley of Fargo, N.D.; sister, Delores Doberstein and her husband, George, of Bloomington, Minn; brother, Ernie Perhus and his wife, Donna, of Sulphur, Okla.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
    Edna is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Dorothy Perhus; husband, Alton “Al” Hovern; sister, Marion Oxford; brother, Alvin Perhus.
    The family invites everyone to the luncheon in the church basement immediately following the committal service.
