  • FARGO – The Benson County Lady Wildcats closed out their 2012-13 high school basketball season on a note on Saturday by finishing fifth in the Class B state basketball tournament with a thrilling 50-47 win over Beach.
With the win, Benson County completed its season with a 25-2 record.
Beach certainly didn't make the Lady Cats' journey to the fifth-place honors an easy walk. The Lady Buccaneers outscored Benson County in the second quarter and carried a lead into the half.
Benson County, which was led by Andrea Jorgenson's 15 points, held their own early in the matchup. The Lady Wildcats matched Beach point-for-point in the first eight minutes of the game and sent the game into the second with the score tied at 12-12.
Beach took charge from there. The Lady Bucs pounded out an 11-7 run in the frame and built a 23-19 lead.
Benson County got its offense in gear in the third. Backed by a three-point shot from Katelynn Engh, the Lady Wildcats erased Beach's lead with a 21-18 streak in the first eight minutes of the second half.
Engh finished the game with 12 points, six of which came on Benson County's only two three-point shots.
The two teams went into the fourth quarter with Beach clinging to a 41-40 advantage.
The Region IV champion, Benson County completed the come-from-behind win by outscoring Beach by a 10-6 margin in the final frame.
Meghan Jorgenson and Sara Schwanke also turned in solid outings for the Lady Wildcats in the win. Jorgenson pushed in 11 points, while Schwanke, the Region IV senior athlete of the year, added eight.
The Lady Wildcats, who posted a 2-1 record at the state tournament, earned their way into the consolation fifth-place game with a 65-57 win over New Town on Friday.
Benson County's lone loss at the tournament was a narrow 58-53 first-round loss to Minot Ryan, the eventual state champion.
