On Monday, March 11, Devils Lake Police Department officers were involved in two pursuits to detain and arrest Cory Young bear (aka Cory Vilandre) who had absconded from the Devils Lake Correctional Facility. Youngbear was observed approximately 10 minutes after a gas drive-off from Cenex East at 12:49 in the amount of $65.37, driving his vehicle at the intersection of 6th St. NE and 6th Ave. NE.
DLPD officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Youngbear, which engaged officers in a pursuit within the northeast residential section of Devils Lake. Youngbear proceeded to drive in a reckless manner in attempt to evade and flee officers, endangered public safety with speeds exceeding 70 mph. Officers disengaged from the pursuit and advised Ramsey County deputies and Highway Patrol troopers to be on the look out for the vehicle last seen leaving city limits traveling east on Highway 2.
At approximately 3:55 p.m. a Ramsey County Sheriff’s deputy observed Youngbear in the suspect vehicle exit the parking lot of Ed’s Bait Shop. Again, an attempt was made to conduct a traffic stop on Youngbear, which initiated a second pursuit into the southeast residential section of Devils Lake. ND State Highway Patrol and DLPD officers responded to assist the deputy pursue Youngbear, who proceeded to drive in a reckless manner to avoid capture. Youngbear lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and collided with a snow embankment on the 100 block of Armour St. Youngbear failed to comply with officers and resisted arrest. Youngbear was charged with two counts of Fleeing in a Motor Vehicle, two counts of Reckless Endangerment, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Driving Under Suspension, No Liability Insurance, Resisting Arrest, Theft of services and Theft of Property.
He is currently being held within the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center Correctional Facility.
