The postseason playoffs get under way tonight for the Devils Lake High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. Both squads begin play in the Eastern Dakota Conference post-season basketball tournament this evening.
The Devils Lake boys, fresh off a play-in game win over Valley City on Saturday, will get their postseason run going at 7:45 p.m. when they travel to Fargo to face off with Shanley.
By virtue of their win over Valley City, the Firebirds enter the tournament as the No. 7 seed. Devils Lake, which finished the regular season at 8-12, was 6-12 in EDC Play/ Shanley, the EDC runner-up during the regular season, is the No. 2 seed with a 16-2 mark on conference.
The winner of the Devils Lake-Shanley matchup will advance to play in the semifinals on Friday at the Fargo Civic Center. The loser will fall into the consolation bracket in the double-elimination tournament.
Grand Forks Red River is the EDC’s top seed. The team, 18-1 overall, will open the three-day tournament this evening against ninth-seeded Fargo North.
Other first-round games will include matchup between fifth-seeded Fargo South and No. 4-seed West Fargo, and sixth-seed Wahpeton and No. 3-seed Fargo Davies.
The boys’ EDC tournament championship game will be played in the NDSU Bison Sports Center.
The Devils Lake girls will also begin their postseason run this evening by traveling to Fargo for a 5 p.m. showdown with West Fargo.
The Lady Firebirds’ enter the EDC girls’ tournament as the No. 6 seed after putting together a 7-12 season.
West Fargo, 17-2 overall, is the No. 2 seed.
Other first-round games in the girls’ tournament include No. 8 Fargo South at No. 1 Fargo Shanley, No. 5 Wahpeton at No. 4 Grand Forks Red River,, and No. 7 Valley City at No. 2 West Fargo.
