The Four Winds-Minnewaukan Indians outscored Warwick by a 12-6 clip in overtime on Saturday afternoon and rolled to a wild 70-64 victory in a loser-out game at the District 7 Basketball Tournament in New Rockford.
With the win, Four Winds-Minnewaukan advanced to a loser-out matchup this evening against New Rockford-Sheyenne. The winner of the contest will advance to the Region IV Basketball Tournament.
Four Winds-Minnewaukan rode the hot hand of Sawn Black early in the contest. The FW-M standout pumped in several key shots early and helped the Lady Indians race to a 19-10 first-quarter lead.
Warwick fought its way back to within 29-23 in the second quarter.
The Lady Indians looked to have regained the lead in the third. Four Winds-Minnewaukan posted a 20-15 spree in the third and took a 49-38 cushion into the final eight minutes.
Warwick refused to go down quietly. The Lady Warriors scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, including the final 11 of the frame, to knot the score at 58-58 at the final buzzer. Traci Owlboy capped the WHS run by sinking a three-pointer with 3.5 seconds left in regulation.
After Bethany Yankton and Brooke Red Fox had traded baskets early in the OT period, the Lady Indians’ offense hit stride. Cherilyn Cloud and Black both hit a pair of free throws and Yankton added a basket to highlight a 7-0 run that staked FW-M to a 67-60 lead.
Black led all scorers in the contest by throwing in 33 points. Trenda Littleghost and Denrae Ami both finished with 10, while Cloud added nine.
Samone Motley led Warwick with 20. Sofia Hernandez chipped in 12.
