For much of the first half on Wednesday night, the No. 24-ranked Williston State College Lady Tetons couldn’t find an answer for the Lake Region State College Lady Royals. When the wanted to take away the inside game, Becca Scheer lt them up from the outside.
When they moved out of their zone defense, Jordyn Kirk wreaked havoc from the baseline.
Unfirtunately for the Lake Region Lady Royals, games aren’t decided on one half.
Williston State College. Which trailed by as many as six points in the first half, rallied to claim a tough 73-69 win in Mon-Dak Athletic Conference action in the Devils Lake Sports Center.
Lake Region State College, now 19-5 overall, proved Williston State’s equal throughout the first half. The Lady Royals erased several WSC leads in the first half behind the offensive charge of Kirk and Scheer.
Both Kirk and Scheer blistered the Lady Tetons’ defense in the first half, combining to tally 30 of the Lady Royals’ 39 first-half points.
Scheer was especially deadly from behind the three-point arc, draining four treys, including one with 11:50 left in the first that staked Lake Region to a 17-16 advantage.
Less than five minutes later, she delivered the big shot for the LRSC women again, hitting from the outside and staking the Lady Royals to a 5-point lead, at 29-24, cushion.
Overall, Scheer accounted for 13 of the Lady Royals’ initial 29 points in the first 14 minutes of action.
Williston managed to catch fire late in the first half. Led by point guard Jazmine Robisnson, the WSC women reeled off 17 points in the final 6:44 of the half to grab a shaky 41-39 halftime lead.
Kirk was just as impressive as Scheer in the LRSC first-half run. She pumped in 15 of her game-high26 points in the frame.
Lake Region opened the second half with a big trey from Tabitha Vigan and regained the lead, at 42-41.
Unfortunately for the Lady Royals, Williston State righted its ship from there. The Lady Tetons outscored Lake Region by a slim 32-30 margin in the final 20 minutes to net the win.
Kirk powered the LRSC offense and defense in the bout. In addition to her offensive totals, the freshman pulled down 15 rebounds.
Leslie Hairston added 16 points and had eight rebounds.
Maggie Lorenz led all Williston scorers with 18. Jackie Lee and Robinson chipped in 14 and 13, respectively.
