Farewell Address manuscript brings $2,300
President George Washington never read his farewell address. A copy was given to Claypoole at the American Daily Advertiser where it was published on September 19, 1796. When Claypoole died, the manuscript was sold at auction on February 12, 1850, to James Lenox for $2,300. The Lenox library and Washington's original manuscript, passed to the New York Public Library.
