Nathan Mertens did everything but drive the bus for the Devils Lake Firebirds on Thursday evening. He might have done that, too, if DLHS head coach Derek Gathman had asked.
Mertens scored a game-high 36 points and powered the Firebirds to a 69-62 victory over the Eagles in a key Eastern Dakota Conference matchup.
Chase Johnson also enjoyed a solid performance for the Firebirds, pushing in 18 points.
With the win, Devils Lake improved to 4-8 in EDC play, and improved to 5-9 overall. Davies slipped to 8-5 in EDC play.
Devils Lake controlled the game from the start. Playing in front of a large crowd in the DLHS Sports Center, the Firebirds reeled off a 37-28 run in the first half.
Andrew Kozlowski led the Eagles with 29 points and David Olson added 15 points.
Briar LeBeau also played well for the Firebirds. He finished the game with nine points.
Devils Lake will return to action tonight when they host Wahpeton.
