Ernestine Elizabeth Lawrence, 80, of Aurora, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2013, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis following a brief illness.
She was born on August 12, 1932, in Verona, the daughter of Elizabeth Newberry Young and Ernest Young, both of whom preceded her in death. She graduated from Aurora High School in 1950 and married Wayne Barnes in 1951; he preceded her in death. On August 5, 1983, she married Dennis Lawrence and spent the remainder of her life living fully and happily by his side.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Marionville and was active as a choir member, Sunday school teacher, Bible study leader and prayer warrior all her life. Ernestine retired as bookkeeper and office manager for KPL Gas Service Company. She loved the stage and entertaining people and will be remembered for her commitment to Aurora as a board member for the Aurora Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Aurora, former owner of Lawrence's Trophy Place and Second Story Book Store in downtown Aurora and current owner of Rustics Flea Market.
She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband of 30 years; her three sons, Bruce (and Trisha) of Columbia, Brent of Portland, Oregon, and Brad (and Sally) of Aurora; her sister, Miriam Perry of Columbia; her brother, Jack Young of Phoenix, Arizona; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, as well as a multitude of friends and family whose lives she touched.
Along with her parents, Ernestine was preceded in death by her brother, Gary Young.
A celebration of Ernestine’s life will be held on Sunday, February 10 from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Aurora Community Center.
