Dorothy (Young) Schonberger, 96, died Saturday, January 26, 2013, at the Wesley Homes Health Center (nursing home) in Des Moines, Wash.
Dorothy was born to Edward Thomas Young and Hilda Emily Bredeson in Devils Lake, N.D, August 11, 1916. A graduate of Devils Lake High School, Dorothy married Robert Theodore Schonberger of Grand Forks, N.D., and they settled in Ellendale N.D. where Robert was an English professor. After raising three sons in Ellendale the couple moved to Dickinson, N.D.; then to a retirement community in Bella Vista, Ark.; and finally to Des Moines, Wash. to be near a son and family.
Usually armed with a warm manner and ready smile, Dorothy was nevertheless not reluctant to speak her mind when something did not seem right or unfair. She was a uniquely caring person who felt a strong obligation, when any friend or member of her large extended family was experiencing difficulties, to send, in her fine handwriting, a letter offering words of consolation and suggestions for relieving the pain and carrying on. A wonderful cook, Dorothy loved good food, especially pie, so much that she liked to call herself a “pie face.”
Dorothy outlived her husband and brother Lyle, who died, respectively, in 1992 and 1996.
She is survived by her three sons, Robert Edward, Ray, N.D.; Richard John, Bellevue, Wash.; and Father Micah (Thomas Michael), St. Benedict’s Monastery, Snowmass, Colo.; eight grandsons; numerous great-grandchildren; three nieces, and one nephew.
Memorial gifts in Dorothy’s name may be sent to St. Benedict’s Monastery, 1012 Monastery Road, Snowmass, Colo 81654.
