  • Harold Norman Rud, 94, of Binford, N.D., formerly New Rockford, N.D. and Sheyenne, N.D., died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, January 29, 2013.

  • Harold Norman Rud, 94, of Binford, N.D., formerly New Rockford, N.D. and Sheyenne, N.D., died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, January 29, 2013. Funeral service will be Friday, February 1 at 2 p.m.at Grandfield Lutheran Cemetery in rural Sheyenne with interment in the Grandfield Lutheran cemetery, rural Sheyenne. Casket bearers will be his grandchildren; Travis Barclay, Joshua Barclay, Derek Barclay, Brittany Barclay, Ciara Clark, Brandon Iverson, Zachary Gilbertson and Jesse Gilbertson. Honorary bearers: are his great-grandchidren, Makenzie Barclay, Ethan Barclay, Brooklyn Barclay, Bentley Barclay, Sky Barclay, Sherman Geer and Landon Hohertz. Military Honors will be accorded by Raymond B. Thorn American Legion Post #30, New Rockford, and the ND National Guard. Harold was born August 25, 1918, in New Salem, N.D., the son of Fred and Anna (Hendrickson) Rud. He was one year old when his family moved back to the family farm at Sheyenne. Harold lived and worked on the family farm until he was inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling, Minn., on October 1, 1942. Harold did his basic training at Camp Phillips, Kansas, where he worked in surgery. He was then a surgical technician at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colo. He was awarded the American Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and a Citation for Meritorious Service. He was discharged February 23, 1946, at Fort Logan, Colo . Harold was united in marriage to Carol Stensland June 23, 1955, at First Lutheran Church in Sheyenne. They made their home near Hendrickson Park west of Sheyenne for 38 years. Besides farming, Harold worked for Warren Implement, Westby Construction, Stensland and Son’s, Ostby Oil, and Logan Oil, all of Sheyenne. In 1993, they moved to New Rockford, where they lived until moving to Binford in September 2012, to be closer to their children. He enjoyed leather work, wood crafts and gardening. He took great pride in his beautiful roses, tulips and glads. Harold will be missed and remembered by his wife of 57 years, Carol; three daughters, LaRae (Dave) Iverson of Hunter, N.D., Joni (Robert) Barclay and Barbara (Dan) Gilbertson, both of Binford, N.D.; eight grandchildren, Travis (Kassie) Barclay, Joshua Barclay, Derek Barclay (Keisha Rickford), Brittany Barclay (Dylan Frappier), Ciara (Ben) Clark, Brandon Iverson (Naomi Hohertz), Zachary Gilbertson, Jesse Gilbertson; seven great-grandchildren, Makenzie, Ethan, Brooklyn, Bentley and Sky Barclay, Sherman Geer, Landon Hohertz; one brother, Norris (Gloria) Rud, New Rockford; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Gladys (Pete) Tveito, and a niece Shirley Rud.
