Journal Staff Report BISMARCK, N.D. — When Lake Region State College and United Tribes tipped off the new Mon-Dak Conference schedule earlier this month in Devils Lake the homestanding Lady Royals had an easy time in taking care of matters en route to a 93-50 win over the Thunderbirds.
In the rematch, not so much.
The Lady Royals broke away from a 53-53 tie, one of seven times the game was deadlocked, and used a 22-6 run to end the game as they defeated United Tribes 75-59 on Monday in Bismarck.
Freshman Leslie Hairston started the game-winning rally when she connected on a short jumper from the right side with just over eight minutes remaining in the game. A total of six different Lady Royals scored during the pivotal spurt.
Hairston finished with a double-double in the game as she scored 10 points to go along with her 15 rebounds. Ashley Knecht, another freshman, led LRSC with 15 points. Becca Scherr and Amber Huntington scored 13 points each.
United Tribes was led by Kiri Schumacher’s game-high 24 points. Lacy Leaf (13) and Shanaye Packineau (12) also reached double figures. The Lady Royals will play the Northern State University junior varsity team on Wednesday at the Devils Lake Sports Center.

Men UTTC 73, LRSC 69 Lake Region State College could scale the mountain when it counted the most.
United Tribes hit five free throws in the closing minute as the Thunderbirds held on for a 73-69 win over the Royals on Monday in Bismarck.
LRSC, which had pulled to within 68-65 on a 3-pointer by Alex Herman, was led in scoring by D.K. Augustine who had 16 points and was one of three Royals to reach double figures. Melvin Langstaff scored 14 points and Gage Deis chipped with 10 points for LRSC, which is now 1-2 in conference play and 11-6 on the season.
UTTC’s Andre Clark led all scorers with 24 points. Teammate Macaulay Brown added 15 while Julito Hutchinson added 11 points for the Thunderbirds who won for the second consecutive game after beating Dakota College at Bottineau last week. LRSC will play an exhibition game on Wednesday at home against Cankdeska Cinkana Community College.
