Ramsey County Sheriff Steve Nelson reported today that the results are in from the anlysis of the black boxes from the two vehicles involved in the crash on Highway 2 Tuesday, Jan. 8 where a N.D. Highway Patrol officer was badly injured.
According to Nelson the read out from the event determined that it was Patrolman Brian Melhoff who made an improper left turn and he will be issued a citation for that.
The incident happened at mile marker 275, approximately five miles east of Devils Lake. Officer Melhoff was airlifted to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks with severe injuries. The truck driver and passenger, Jody Mann, were both taken to Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake, treated and released.
The boxes of both the Highway Patrol vehicle and the pickup truck driven by Josh Mann, International Falls, Minn., were analyzed. According to Nelson the boxes record an amazing amount of detail about the incident including speed, the use of turn indicators, deployment of air bags, braking and so on. All this information is valuable in determining what happened in a crash and who may have been at fault. They are similar to the black boxes used to study airplane crashes.
