The Ramsey County Sheriff's office says an accident involving a highway patrolman on Jan. 8 on Highway 2 east of Devils Lake remains under investigation. Captain Kyle Ternes of the North Dakota Highway Patrol confirmed that one of the NDHP officers was involved in the accident.
Patrolman Brian Melhoff, 31, of Devils Lake was heading east on Highway 2 to investigate a possible accident when he collided with a pickup truck at mile marker 275, approximately five miles east of the city, at 6:45 p.m.
Melhoff was airlifted to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks with severe injuries. The truck driver, Josh Mann, 20, and the passenger, Jody Mann, 23, both of International Falls, Minn., were taken to Mercy Hospital, treated and released.
