  • By Ray Maloney Journal Sports Editor Lake Region State College showed some things that have been missing from its arsenal in recent years. And coach Curt Herman is pretty pleased. “We have become a team that really pulls together and lean on each other,” said Herman after watching his Royals withstand a run by United Tribes and then went on to defeat the Thunderbird 81-69 on Wednesday at the Devils Lake Sports Center. It was the Mon-Dak Conference opener for the Royals, who improved to 10-4 on the season with the victory. United Tribes, which trailed 35-32 at halftime, scored on a 3-pointer by Jarell Grant just 19 seconds into the second half to tie the game. It marked the closest UTCC had been since the opening tip. But, instead of faltering, the Royals responded. Darnell Landon scored just 16 seconds later to give the lead back to the Royals and then added another field goal to put the Royals in front 39-35 with 18:52 to go in the game. A Channing Reed basket with 12:20 to go and give the Royals a double-digit lead and virtually sealed the game for the victors. Freshman Melvin Langstaff led all scorers with 28 points for the Royals, who placed three others in double digits. Gage Deis added 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and teammates Reed and Landon finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Juilto Hutchinson led the Thunderbirds with 18 points. Jarrell Grant and Macaulay Brown added 14 and 11 points, respectively. The Royals will play at Mayville tonight when they take on the junior varsity team from Mayville State. But, despite going nearly five minutes without adding to its total, Lake Region State College never did find itself in trouble thanks to a huge lead to start the game. LRSC went on a 28-2 run to start the game and withstood the scoring drought en route to a 93-50 win over United Tribes. “We are starting to find out what each of the other players can do,” said Duane Schwab after watching his team improve to 10-2 on the season by winning the conference opener on Wednesday. “We’ve got some things to learn,” he added, “especially on defense. This isn’t high school anymore.” Jordyn Kirk sparked the early burst for the Lady Royals by scoring 11 of the first 18 points for her team. She was limited the rest of the way by foul trouble. But it mattered little. LRSC held United Tribes without a field goal until Sydney Thompson connected on a shot that made the score 32-5 with 11:29 to go in the first half. Amber Huntington led LRSC with 13 points and was one of seven Lady Royals to reach double figures in Wednesday’s game. Becca Scherr, a freshman from Carrington, finished with 12 points.
