  • The Bush Foundation has awarded the Fargo-Moorhead Area Foundation a $100,000 grant for a collaborative project to increase philanthropy in North Dakota. There are five community foundations in North Dakota: Fargo-Moorhead Area Foundation; Community Foundation of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks; Devils Lake Area Foundation; Minot Area Community Foundation; and the North Dakota Community Foundation. All five community foundations are working collaboratively on this project. Community foundations by definition have a geographic focus and are a vehicle for philanthropy and community service within their areas. At the core of community foundation work is the creation of permanent or endowed funds that will forever provide support for donor interests and/or community needs. In 2007, the North Dakota Legislature created a Charitable Income Tax Credit for businesses, trusts, and estates making charitable gifts to qualified endowed funds in North Dakota. Legislation in 2011 enhanced the tax credit; adding the tax credit for outright individual gifts to qualified endowment funds. Financial institutions were also added in 2011. North Dakota is one of very few states who offer this tax incentive for philanthropy. The grant will allow the Community Foundations of North Dakota, in consultation with a local marketing firm, to develop and implement an awareness campaign in 2013 to increase residents’ understanding of endowment funds and awareness of the North Dakota Charitable Income Tax Credit.
