Katherine V. Walker, 97, of Maddock, N.D., died Monday, December 31, 2012, at St. Aloisius Medical Center in Harvey, N.D. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, January 4, 2013 at 10 a.m. at St. Williams Catholic Church in Maddock with Fr. Brian Bachmeier, celebrant. Burial will be in the spring at Greenwood Cemetery, rural Maddock. Visitation will be Friday at the church an hour before the Mass. Casket bearers will be friends and neighbors attending the Mass. Music for the Mass will be from Melissa Benson and Becky Brandvold. Katherine Veronica Kuntz was born October 25, 1915 at Devils Lake, N.D., the daughter of Urban and Maryanne (Kurtz) Kuntz. She was baptized and confirmed in the Roman Catholic Church and throughout life to the last, that faith was hers. She was raised on Devils Lake’s westside and graduated from Devils Lake Central High School in 1934. At the age of 14 she began working at the Montgomery Ward Store and eventually became the secretary to the store manager. On October 13, 1952, Katherine married Leo Ignatius Walker in Devils Lake. The couple lived and farmed the Walker homestead near Maddock. Leo passed away in 1987. Katherine remained on the farm and was lovingly cared for by her family until her death. Katherine and her husband, Leo, will long be remembered for their untiring efforts, financial aid and sacrifices in seeing the building of St. William’s Catholic church to its completion and dedication on September 9, 1955. Their determination will never be forgotten. Katherine was a true Christian, conforming to the teachings of her church. She never compromised with what she considered wrong and was a staunch friend to many. Surviving are her children, Katherine Walker and Leo M. Walker both of Maddock; two grandchildren of the heart, Derrick and Roman Fournier; a sister, Stephanie (William) Ryan of Harvey; and a sister-in-law, Joan Walker of Devils Lake. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents; husband; six brothers and a sister.
