CANDO, N.D. — The rematch was anything but what North Star had envisioned when the 2012-13 schedule was drawn up.
Eight months after Beulah ended North Star’s bid for a second state championship in as many years with a triumph in the state championship game, the Miners were back to their old tricks as Beulah, the No. 2 team in the state, assured itself of moving to the top of the heap with a 68-63 win over the top-ranked Bearcats on Friday in Cando.
Beulah used a 21-15 spurt in the second quarter to grab a 35-33 lead at the intermission and then padded its lead by outscoring the Bearcats 16-10 in the third period to lead 51-43 heading into the final eight minutes of play.
North Star managed to pull within one point with just under three minutes to play, but the Miners went on a 6-0 burst to virtually seal the win before a packed house at the Cando gym.
Trevor Zacher led three Miners in double figures with a team-high 25 points while Cody Nelson and Jesse Hettich added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
North Star’s Jacob Hagler led all scorers with 29 points. Alex Weston chipped in with 12 points.
North Star rebounded the following night by getting past Rugby 59-51 in a matchup of ranked teams in Rugby.
No other details of that game were made available.
North Star will play in a showcase on Thursday in Aberdeen (S.D.) and will return to play at Harvey-Wells County on Saturday.
