  • Nels B. Gilberg, 80, of Grand Forks, N. D., died Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, December 22 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 1405 S. 9th St., Grand Forks. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m Saturday, December 22 in the church. A private family burial will be in Memorial Park North Cemetery, Grand Forks. Nels Borg Gilberg was born on January 9, 1932 to Albert and Sigrid (Aasven) Gilberg on a farm in Ramsey County, N.D. He grew up and attended school at Churchs Ferry, N.D., graduating from Churchs Ferry High School in 1949. Nels served in the US Army. After discharge from the military, Nels returned to North Dakota and was united in marriage to Carol Cowan on August 29, 1953. They lived in Devils Lake where Nels began employment with Western Auto. They moved to Grand Forks in 1954 where he continued his employment with Western Auto until he retired in October, 1995. He loved all sports, especially Sioux Hockey, and enjoyed spending time with his family. In retirement he enjoyed time at Cass Lake, Minn. He was honest and generous in all that he did. Nels is survived by his wife, Carol; sons, Tom, Burnsville, Minn., Ronald (LeeAnn), Bemidji, Minn., Michael (Pam), Mendota Heights, Minn., Curtis (Debbie), Thompson, N.D., Paul, Grand Forks, and Neal (fiancée Trina Mehl), Surrey, N.D.; 10 grandchildren, four great grandchildren; a sister, Donna Bye, Fargo, N.D.; a brother, Clayton (Barbara), Sun City, Calif. He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and one brother. Memorials are preferred to Calvary Lutheran Youth Ministry, Altru Cancer Center, or the American Heart Association.
