  • The Devils Lake City Commission received two awards at its meeting Monday night, presented by the North Dakota Ready Mix and Concrete Products Association for work on recent projects.
The city received the Innovation Award for the DL City Embankment, Creel Bay Reach, Utility Abandonment Plan, as well as the award Excellence in Concrete, Devils Lake City Embankments, Phase I, Creel Bay Reach, 100,000 GPM Pump Station and Gatewell.
The commission approved a memo from the Devils Lake Planning Commission recommending approval of Urban Road Projects for 2013-2016, which could lead to federal funding to improve 5th Avenue from Highway 2 near Hardees to 1st street by the east viaduct. City engineer Mike Grafsgaard said "there is strange cracking on the roadway" and that further research is needed to determine if the road needs to be rebuilt rather than doing an asphalt overlay.
"It appears lots of panels need to be replaced and that could be cost prohibitive," Grafsgaard said.
In commission portfolio news, fire chief Jim Moe said his department has secured a government grant for $44,600 to purchase new breathing apparatus and meters.
The commission also approved a measure to purchase land, the Ziegler property, adjacent to city hall, which will be used in the future for parking and storage.
The next meeting of the city commission is Mon. Jan. 2 at 5:30 p.m.
