GRAND FORKS, N.D. — What started out on a high note turned sour as Grand Forks Red River used a 23-2 run in the first half en route to a convincing 93-54 win over Devils Lake on Thursday in Eastern Dakota Conference boys basketball action.
Devils Lake, which used a similar spurt of its own earlier in the week to rally past Fargo North in the season opener, had taken a 10-4 lead in the early going of Thursday’s game before the defending state champion Roughriders put things together.
“We just didn’t play defense,” Devils Lake Derek Gathman said, “and (Red River) is really good.”
Nate Mertens led the Firebirds with 22 points and surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for his career with a field goal in the second half. Chase Johnson also finished in double figures for the Firebirds. He scored 10 points.
Devils Lake will entertain West Fargo on Saturday as part of a doubleheader with the the DLHS girls team. The Firebird girls open their home season tonight when they play host to Red River at the Devils Lake Sports Center.
