Melvin Langstaff has done a lot of things with the basketball during his brilliant career. Countless postseason honors during his four years as a starter at Warwick High School and the state’s Mr. Basketball honor following last season were all just a prelude to his continued success at Lake Region State College. But not even Langstaff could have imagined what he was able to accomplish on Tuesday. As the first half was drawing to a close Langstaff went to the free throw line with a chance to add to his point total. He did that as he calmly sank the first toss. The second opportunity, not so much. His shot bounced off the rim, came down and somehow lodged between the rim and the backboard. Physics aside, Langstaff and the Royals had little trouble in ending a four-game losing streak by racing past the Mayville State junior varsity 102-57 at the Devils Lake Sports Center. “We played pretty well as a team,” LRSC coach Curt Herman said. The Royals spotted the Comets the first two points on the game when Andrew Berge scored on an easy basket underneath. LRSC freshman Channing Reed tied the game 15 seconds later and Darnell Landon’s lazer-like bounce pass through the lane to Langstaff allowed Lake Region to take the lead for good at 4-2 with 18:02 to play in the first half. That began a 24-7 run by the Royals that all but put the game out of reach for the Comets. Lake Region placed three players in double figures and put a total of 13 players into the scoring column Langstaff led the Royals with 20 points while teammates Sean Norton and Mitchell Wirth both added 11 points in the winning effort. Tanner Stapleton paced the victors with 10 rebounds. LRSC is idle until a Jan. 7 date at home against Oglala Lakota College.
