Cole Thompson picked the best of times to tally his first-ever varsity goal. The eighth grader enjoyed it so much he added a second as Devils Lake picked up its first win of the season with a 3-0 win over Hazen-Beulah on Friday at Burdick Arena.
The two teams were unable to find the net through the first two periods of play and were deadlocked after the first 34 minutes of Friday’s game.
That all changed in a hurry when Austin Moser took a pass from teammate Tanner Elshaug just 52 seconds into the final period to put the Firebirds in front.
Thompson then added his two goals to provide some breathing room for the Firebirds.
Kurtz stopped 19 shots through the first two periods and ended the game with 29 saves.
Devils Lake (0-1-0 EDC/1-2-0 overall) will return to action on Thursday when the Firebirds entertain Grafton-Park River at Burdick Arena.
The Spoilers are 4-1-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in the Eastern Dakota Conference.
