  • With Veteran's Day approaching, the local Salvation Army is asking for the Lake Region's assistance in donating items for an upcoming homeless veterans relief distribution event, which is not receiving supplies as expected due to the disruption caused on the East Coast by Hurricane Sandy.
The Salvation Army program is called Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF), and its local Outreach Specialist Ellen McKinnon said the donated items are needed for two stand downs to be held in Bismarck and Grand Forks on Nov. 15. During the stand downs, homeless vets can come and obtain a wide variety of items they might need. McKinnon said the term stand down originated during the Vietnam War, during which vets began associating the term with "a safe place where they could relax, get food, call home, etc."
She said the stand downs next week will benefit Devils Lake homeless vets as well, since due to crowding these individuals are often given a ticket to Grand Forks or Bismarck to receive services.
Items of immediate need include winter outerwear of all types and for all ages and sizes, personal hygiene items, tarps, flashlights and batteries, hand sanitizer, gallon zip lock bags, mini aluminum loaf pans, sterno cooking fuel, baby wipes, feminine hygiene, peanut butter, chewing gum, wrapped hard candy, pop top foods and food storage containers.
Items may be dropped off at the TSC in Devils Lake this Friday through Monday, Nov. 9-12.
