Journal Staff Report WILLISTON, N.D. — The 2012-13 college basketball season started out strong for Lake Region State College. The Royals scored a pair of wins in a tournament at Williston State College, while the Lady Royals were also triumphant in both of their games during the two-day event. Lake Region defeated Little Big Horn College 92-85 in the season opener on Friday as former Warwick High School standout and last year’s Mr. Basketball in North Dakota Melvin Langstaff scored 23 points in his first collegiate game to pace the Royals. LRSC made it a sweep by defeating the Jamestown College junior varsity team 79-57 on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Lady Royals squeaked past Jamestown College’s junior varsity 63-60 on Saturday as freshman Ashley Knect came off the bench to connect on all four of her shots from the floor to spark the victors. LRSC crushed Little Big Horn on Friday. The LRSC men will play the Mayville State junior varsity on Tuesday in a game in Mayville. Both the Royals and Lady Royals will make their 2012-13 home debut beginning Friday when they play host to the Royals Invitational at the Devils Lake Sports Center.
