By Ray Maloney Journal Sports Editor NEW ROCKFORD, N.D. — After combining for 144 points in their two previous meetings points were at a premium on Saturday as New Rockford-Sheyenne and Lakota-Adams-Edmore each looked to advance in the state nine-man playoffs. In the end it was the No. 2 Rockets that got the necessary margin to keep their season alive. Ethan Haley ran for one touchdown and threw for two others as NR-S defeated the Raiders 22-13 on a cool day that saw light snowflakes falling that truly signalled playoff football in North Dakota. New Rockford-Sheyenne will entertain Cavalier on Saturday to determine which team advances to the Dakota Bowl the following week in Grand Forks. “We know each other well,” NR-S coach Elliott Belquist said of the visiting Raiders in explaining the rather low-scoring game, by nine-man standards. “When two teams know each other as well as we do, there are no surprises ... we both know what to expect.” New Rockford-Sheyenne had to overcome two turnovers in the first quarter before managing to get on the scoreboard early in the second period. Haley got to the outside and ran virtually untouched down the left sideline from 56 yards out to give the Rockets the lead at 9:07 in the quarter. That the Rockets were in front was a credit to the NR-S defense, which stiffened following both turnovers in the first half. “I am very proud of our defense,” Belquist said. “They fought through adversity and allowed us a chance and that is what we ask of them each time.” Haley connected on a 45 pass to Alex Perleberg for his first scoring toss of the game as the Rockets extended their lead to 14-0 late in the third quarter. Eric Haugland’s seven-yard scoring run allowed the Raiders to close the gap midway through the final period and a scoring pass from Haugland to Chris Miller with just three seconds left in the game was not enough.
