On Oct. 18, Spirit Lake Nation Tribal Member Trish McKay, who recently passed her bar exam, was sworn in at a ceremony held at the Spirit Lake Casino and Resort.

Introductions were moderated by Spirit Lake Nation Chief Judge, Shirley M. Cain, who is a member of the Red Lake Nation in Minnesota. The opening prayer was given by Joseph Lawrence, who is a Tribal Elder of Spirit Lake.

The official swearing-in ceremony was the first order of business at the meeting. Tribal Chair Roger Yankton officially swore in new Associate Judge Trish McKay, who was there in attendance with her family members.

After that, the drum group, Sioux Crossing, from South Dakota, performed an honor song for McKay. She is the first tribal member in the Spirit Lake Nation’s history to pass the bar exam, in order to be an associate judge for the tribal courts. Analogously, in 1991, Cain was the first female in the history of the Red Lake Nation in Minnesota to pass the bar exam and become a Minnesota State licensed attorney. As a direct result, Cain is the current Chief Judge of the Spirit Lake Nation.

There was an open session for anyone to make or express their thoughts for Associate Judge McKay. After that, there was a prayer for the food and then everyone enjoyed a dinner of beef and chicken and all the fixings.
