The East Devils Lake Outlet has developed a leak and been shut down for repairs.
The pipeline from the east end outlet of Devils Lake empties into the area near the Tolna Coulee. The concrete structure shown in the background and across the center of the photo was constructed as part of the design to slow the velocity of the water being pumped from Devils Lake to avoid erosion.
However a leak in that huge pipe as it goes into that structure caused the damage seen here that has shut down the outlet for repairs.
None of the mud, clay and water shown here should be in this spot. It’s all part of the erosion that has occurred around the east side of the concrete structure that was intended to keep this from happening.
The force of the water and clay spilling around and from underneath the outlet velocity control structure has lifted the huge concrete blocks and slabs and tumbled them together.
