The carcass of a newly slaughtered bison hangs from a tractor in a field outside Fort Totten Friday as school children and community members encircle the location.
As the two-year-old American Bison was killed and dressed Friday morning, elders from the tribe explained how each item was used in the old days and how the process was one of unity for the people. “It brought everyone together,” Katherine Howard said.
She and others organized the kill on Friday saying she hoped it would bring together the people of the Spirit Lake Nation.
The head of the bison attached to the hide of the animal will be carefully preserved while the organs and meat will be distributed and consumed.
