First Christian Church Disciples of Christ- Disciples Women held their Annual Fall Assembly at the Mt. Vernon Christian Church on September 24. Women from around the Ozarks came to see long-time friends, and worship with their sisters in the faith.
Fellowship began at 9:30 a.m. Willa Faye Viele of the First Christian Church of Lebanon opened with the prelude, and Wanda Hedenburg- Ozark Lakes Disciples Women President led the assembly in prayer. Reverend David Nordyke of the Mt. Vernon Christian Church welcomed the ladies and Wanda Hedenberg gave the introduction.
Dr. G. Mike Weinman, OLA Area Minister gave an inspirational talk, and Caroline Deeds led the worship and beautiful hymns were sung.
Ruth Winkler from Women- to- Women shared her interesting trip to the Republic of Congo and Democratic of Congo in 2011. She spoke about arriving in the Congo and witnessing the unbelievable poverty that the Congolese people are subjected to; but through all of their intense suffering, they have somehow held on to their enduring love of Christ that keeps them safe, and alive in a part of the world that is constantly in peril. She talked about ColTan, a material that is used in making cell phones and is mercilessly robbed from the people of the Congo. Nearly 3 million people have died in a four- year war over Coltan, a heat-resistant mineral ore widely used in cell phones, laptops and play stations. Eighty percent of the worlds Coltan reserves are held in The Democratic Republic of Congo, yet, amid constant war, famine, poverty and displacement, these people continue to worship Christ.
A delicious buffet- style lunch was served and during the afternoon session, Vice-President, June Owen and Wanda Hedenberg shared information from Brenda Hines-of the Mid America Region.
Disciples Women- Installation and Recognition of Officers 2012; officers were acknowledged for their many contributions to Disciples Women.
Communion was given by Caroline Deeds-Central C.C. and Jean Ellen Trapp of First C.C. Lebanon and the assembly was dismissed.
It was a lovely fall day, and a blessing to worship with Disciples Women from all around the Ozarks.
