  • Candidate for the Senate Heidi Heitkamp made a couple of stops in Devils Lake on Tuesday as she travels around the state campaigning.
Earlier in the day she spent some time with Forward Devils Lake getting an update of the good things happening in the area, new businesses building and potential projects in the works.
Then she spent her lunch hour with the Devils Lake Kiwanis Club as their guest speaker for the week.
Heitkamp talked about the “big things” she wanted to affect when she becomes North Dakota’s new Senator. That list included passing a farm bill that would be good for North Dakota farmers, developing an energy policy for the state, the nation’s deficit and healthcare.
Her emphasis, she said, would be to work together with anyone who was willing to make things happen in the four big areas she’d outlined. She referenced her experience working in the energy industry and her work as Attorney General as excellent preparation for becoming senator.
She also touched upon her past history battling cancer when she addressed questions regarding healthcare legislation. “It’s not perfect, but we certainly don’t want to lose what we have gained, especially if you have any sort of pre-existing condition,” she said. Pointing around the room she said that she thought probably everyone had some sort of pre-existing condition to be concerned about.
