When Devils Lake resident Bobbi Otis had to begin radiation treatments for a benign inoperable brain tumor last month she had no idea what to expect. The treatments are so small, so concentrated that she says the only effect it has on her, that she can measure, is fatigue.
She had no idea either what would happen back in her hometown as coworkers, friends and family have come together to present a series of fundraisers to help defray medical and living expenses while she is in Minneapolis undergoing treatment at Abbot Northwestern Hospital.
Thursday, Sept. 13 there will be a bake sale in the lobby of the Devils Lake Journal with all proceeds going to Otis. That starts at 9 a.m. and goes until 4 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 14 there will be a benefit supper at Lotta’s complete with silent auction, live auction, raffle of slabs of bacon and a free-will offering for the meal of meatballs, mashed potatoes, corn and rolls.
Donations have been pouring in from around the country with one man from Pennsylvania, for example, who doesn’t know her but who read about Otis’ situation on the Devils Lake Journal’s website, sent a check for $2,000. He is a graduate of Devils Lake Central High School but hasn’t lived here for many, many years and has maintained a connection with his former hometown through the Devils Lake Journal on line.
That’s just one of many stories about the generosity of the people from Devils Lake and the Lake Region - even when they don’t live here anymore.
Now, another former resident is stepping up to help. Mike Michalski is a well-known musician throughout the region. The former Lakewood resident is known for his work with the Nitro Brothers, the Convertibles and more recently the Robby Vee Band. He learned about Otis’ situation and is sending some memorabilia to be auctioned off Friday evening at the benefit. But he’s not stopping there. He’s coming back to his hometown to do a concert and the proceeds will go to Otis. That is set for Saturday, Sept. 29 at the K.C. Hall at 8 p.m. There will be a charge to get into the concert which has not yet been determined but it most likely will prove to be a rocking good time. More information will become available closer to the date of the concert.
