Mother Nature must not have like the way the 2012 high school football season began for Devils Lake. Thus, the good lady created a weather delay that the Firebirds took advantage of. Austin Schall scored on a two-yard touchdown scamper in the fourth quarter that lifted Devils Lake to a 22-19 win over Jamestown over the weekend at Roller Field. The game got under way on Friday and things did not go too well for the Firebirds. Jamestown took the opening kickoff of the season and marched downfield in 10 plays as a wide open C.J. Soulis hauled in an 18-yard pass from Matthew Grounds to give the Blue Jays the early advantage. That was when the rain and lightning hit the area and forced the suspension of the game. After waiting for more than one hour, game officials and officials from both schools decided to resume play on Saturday afternoon. Devils Lake wasted little time in recovering from its slow start as tight end Chase Johnson caught a short pass from quarterback Nate Mertens and turned it into a 31-yard scoring play. Schall's run for conversion tied the game at 8-8. Later in the period the speedy Schall got loose on a 53-yard burst to paydirt to give the Firebirds, the defending Eastern Dakota Conference co-champions, their first lead of the season. James Olson's kick following Schall's long run put Devils Lake in front 15-8. The visitors closed the gap late in the first half when Grounds hit Sean Lindberg for a 12-yard scoring pass, but the conversion kick failed and Devils Lake held a slight 15-13 lead at the intermission. Taylor Orr scored on a 10-yard run in the third period to put the Blue Jays back in front and forced Devils Lake into rally mode before the Firebirds were able to secure the victory. It was the second straight season Devils Lake had defeated Jamestown to open the season. The Firebirds clipped the Blue Jays 49-8 last season in Jamestown. The Firebirds continue its early-season home stretch when they entertain Mandan on Friday at Roller Field. The Braves, who defeated Devils Lake 49-7 last season, opened the 2012 season on Friday by slipping past Grand Forks Central.
