  • The Devils Lake City Commission approved two motions at its August 6 meeting that pave the way for two new businesses to open their doors in the city.
The commission passed a motion approving a Renaissance Zone application for construction of a building at 508 Highway 2 (the former site of Krantz's).
The application was submitted by Dakota Apple Partnership, from which Applebee's will lease, according to Devils Lake Mayor Dick Johnson.
The application will now be submitted to the state for final approval. Renaissance Zone is a North Dakota tax incentive program, and in this case will allow the restaurant to receive a five-year, 100 percent property tax exemption. The Applebee's is expected to open December 15.
The commission also passed a motion to change zoning from agricultural to highway commercial for a parcel of land location in the SW 1/4 of Section 20 (Highway 2 W), where Butler Machinery plans to open a branch.
Devils Lake City Engineer Mike Grafsgaard told the commission that the numerous road improvement projects throughout the city should be completed soon.
In addition, Grafsgaard said planned improvements to College Drive should be completed before area schools begin the school year.
The next city commission meeting will be held Monday, August 20, at 5:30 p.m. at 423 6th Street NE.
