  • BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Some of the North Dakota Highway Patrol's new officers will be focusing on the weight of vehicles, instead of how fast they're going.
Two of the new graduates of the patrol's training academy are assigned to motor carrier enforcement.
Highway Patrol Commander James Prochniak says the troopers will carry portable scales and check trucks for weight violations.
Western North Dakota roads are taking a pounding from the oil industry's heavy truck traffic, and Prochniak says it's important to make sure state weight regulations are enforced. He says that will help protect the state's infrastructure.
Eight new Highway Patrol officers finished their training last week and joined the force. Six of them will be stationed in western North Dakota.
