  • BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Officials say visitation at North Dakota's state parks is strong halfway through the tourist season.
The Parks and Recreation Department says just under 400,000 people visited the state's 13 parks during the first half of 2012. That was up 20 percent over last year, when flooding was a problem in several areas of the state.
Parks Director Mark Zimmerman says the visitation so far this year is almost on pace with the first half of 2010. Visitation during that entire year was the fifth-highest in recorded history. And Zimmerman says it's possible that this year's visitation has exceeded the first half of 2010 because vehicles on a detour route at Icelandic State Park aren't being counted.
Fort Stevenson State Park on Lake Sakakawea near Garrison leads the way in visitation.
