  • DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's chief water engineer has ordered more extensive erosion monitoring for a new water outlet from Devils Lake.
For several years, the state Water Commission has been operating an outlet from Devils Lake's west end to drain excess water into the Sheyenne River.
A newly constructed outlet on Devils Lake's east end will drain water through the Tolna Coulee to the Sheyenne.
Opponents of the project asked for a hearing on their concerns about the new outlet. The Grand Forks Herald reports that Water Commission chief engineer Todd Sando has now affirmed a state permit to operate the outlet.
But Sando says in a memo that the permit should include monitoring of Tolna Coulee erosion, from Devils Lake to the point where the outlet enters the Sheyenne River.
