  • The road into Grahams Island State Park has recently undergone its third raise in the past 20 years and to celebrate the completion of that work a ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for Friday, Aug. 3 near the park’s entrance at 11 a.m.
The cooperation of the North Dakota state legislature, the North Dakota Highway Department, the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department, North Dakota Game and Fish along with both Benson and Ramsey counties and the city of Devils Lake led to this final $15 million six-foot raise.
The raise and paving of the road into the state’s busiest state park will be completed this week. Approximately five miles of the road was raised six feet by Ames Construction and though they have managed to keep the road open during construction, it has been a challenge for drivers to access the park.
“Grahams Island State Park is one of the ‘favorites’ in the park system and the state recognized the importance of keeping it open,” NDPRD Director Mark Zimmerman said. “IT’s important to the regional and state economies providing sportsmen one of the few public access points to the great fishery - Devils Lake.”
Information on Grahams Island State Park and the road raise can be found online at the NDPRD website at www.parkrec.nd.gov.
