  • DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Air National Guard will begin operating a practice range for drone aircraft this fall.
Air Guard Col. Rick Gibney says the Federal Aviation Administration has established blocks of restricted airspace for the training.
The space will be up to 10,000 feet above sea level over Camp Grafton South. The area covers 9,300 acres between Devils Lake and Jamestown.
Within the space, drone pilots will be able to practice with lasers that are used to pick out targets. The Grand Forks Herald reports (http://bit.ly/MKfzoc) other aircraft will be barred from the airspace during training.
Gibney is commander of the Air Guard's 119th Wing in Fargo. The wing operates Predator drones. They're capable of flying at high altitudes for long periods for surveillance, and they can fire missiles at targets.
