Eighteen students from the Lake Area Career and Technology Center in Devils Lake recently competed in the 48th Annual National SkillsUSA Championships in Kansas City, Missouri. One seven member team competed in the Opening and Closing Ceremony Competition for the 7th year in a row! This competition is a demonstration of the proper procedure to be used when opening and closing a meeting. They earned the right to compete and represent North Dakota by placing first in the State SkillsUSA Competition held this spring in Bismarck. After the preliminary round of competition, this team was chosen as one of the top 12 teams putting them in the final round. As a result, this team ended up with an 8th place finish in the nation! Members of the team were Amber Carlson, trisha Hoffart, Amanda Lilleberg, Hanna Pike, Sabrina Rossow-Pfannsmith, Katie Traynor and Emily Schnaidt.
Another LACTC competitor was Jacob Clouse competing in the Medical Math contest. After a grueling 2 hour math exam, it was determined that Jacob placed 11th in the nation.
The Construction Team Works team from the LACTC also competed in Kansas City for the 2nd year in a row. The team consisting of Brock Ratzloff, Jacob Burckhard, Timothy Gleason and Jesse Halvorson placed 15th in the nation as compared to 27th last year! This team has some young members on it so hopefully will make another repeat appearance in Kansas City next summer!
Other LACTC students competing in Kansas City were Erik Estenson in Carpentry and 5 students on the Quiz Bowl team: Brady Heustis, Grant Jacobson, Joshua Swenson, Caitlynne Nygaard and Brianna Leiphon. Though they did not place in the top 15 in the nation, they did their best and represented North Dakota in fine fashion.
Any student enrolled in Health Careers, Automotive Service Technology, Welding or Building Trades at the LACTC is eligible to participate in SkillsUSA.
This organization is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives working together to ensure America has a skilled work force. It helps each student to excel and provides quality educational experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. It also builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes and communication skills.
The trip to Kansas City was made possible by donations from many local businesses and organizations. Without their generosity and support of SkillsUSA, these students would not have had this experience and the chance to meet students from all across the United States. The students were accompanied by Marla Luehring, The SkillsUSA Advisor/Health Careers Instructor and Jens Stokke, the Building Trades instructor at the LACTC. Marla is very proud of the students' accomplishments and wants everyone to know that they were fine representatives of North Dakota!
