  • North Dakota's First Lady Betsy Dalrymple stopped at the Lake Region Public Library on Thursday to help celebrate the end of this year's Summer Reading Program and promote “Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.”
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is a program that promotes early literacy by giving a child a free book each month until they are five years old. The program is sponsored locally by the Devils Lake Rotary and is completely free to parents and children.
“I am delighted to be here,” Dalrymple said. “What a great crowd.”
She read a few statistics about reading, noting 88 percent of the children in the program are more interested in reading now that they are receiving books in the mail.
As a former teacher, Dalrymple said she has made education a focus during her time in office and the Imagination Library project has been one of her success stories.
“When I became First Lady there were eight in the state, now there are 22,” she said.
In the Lake Region, she noted, over 400 children are already registered for the program, but there are more books available.
“I encourage you to tell a friend,” she said.
The program is open to all children from birth to age five in Ramsey and Benson counties. A parent or guardian must complete a registration form at the library and then the child will begin receiving a book each month until they turn five or move from the designated county.
The purpose of the program is to make a difference in the future of the community.
“It sounds almost too simple to be true, but by reading regularly with your children during their preschool years, you are giving them the biggest boost toward a successful education they will ever get,” said the brochure. “Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is a free gift to our children. All you have to do is read to your child.”
Dalrymple thanked the crowd for inviting her as a guest.
“Have a great day and read a lot!” she said.
    Fun & games
To celebrate the conclusion of the Summer Reading Program, a party was held at the library, with face painting, ice cream and prizes inside and a number of games outside.
Children of all ages gathered to create sidewalk art with chalk, play “Plinko,” pick-a-fish and other games.
Popcorn, water and juice were served as a snack.
