  • A 25-year-old Rugby man remains in custody awaiting a trial date to be set stemming from charges of alleged burglary and gross sexual imposition.
Matthew Allen Houle, who has previously lived in Devils Lake, is charged with breaking into a Devils Lake home on March 18 and entering the bedroom of a 10-year-old Devils Lake girl and forcing her to engage in a number of sexual acts.
Houle was apprehended a short time later while driving his vehicle after the victim provided local authorities with a good description of her assailant, according to Ramsey County State's Attorney Lonnie Olson, who is prosecuting the case.
Olson said the parties were recently in court for a bond hearing and Houle remains in custody at the Law Enforcement Center in lieu of a $30,000 cash bond and Olson added his office is awaiting DNA results before proceeding with the case against the former Devils Lake resident.
Olson added this is the first case of its kind involving strangers in his 22 years in office. He said the previous cases of sexual imposition were alleged to have taken place between victims familiar with one another.
The burglary charge, a Class B felony, carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment if convicted. The gross sexual imposition charge, a Class AA felony, carries a maximum sentence of life without parole.
Houle has pleaded innocent to both charges.
