  • It’s the end of an era, Blue Cloud Abbey near Marvin, SD will be closing later this year.
There is a strong connection with the northeast South Dakota monastery and Devils Lake most recently through Fr. Gerald Buscher who served as pastor of St. Joseph’s Church and St. Mary’s High School for ten years.
The monastery has a long history in the Lake Region with priests and brothers serving both the St. Michael Indian Mission and Fort Totten Seven Dolars Church as well as the Devils Lake parish through the years.
It was monks that started both St. Joseph’s parish in Devils Lake and Blue Cloud Abbey, which was named in 1930 for a local Sioux chief.
The Abbey, located south and east of Sisseton, SD and seven and a half miles east of Marvin, has served as a monastery and retreat center for the entire region including North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota.
